The cyberattacks - reminder of the importance of network monitoring and security

Remain alert. The cyberattacks are a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity and network monitoring in today's world.

Cyberattacks have become a growing concern in today's world, as the use of technology continues to increase across all sectors. From small businesses to large corporations and even governments, no one is immune to the threat of cybercrime.

With each passing day, new methods of attacks are being developed, making it increasingly challenging to protect against them  (how to detect network IoCs). As a result, cybersecurity has become a top priority for organizations and individuals alike. The consequences of a successful cyberattack can be severe, ranging from financial loss to reputational damage and even legal repercussions. It is essential to stay informed about the latest trends in cybersecurity and take the necessary measures to safeguard against potential threats.

According to NASK Polish research and development organization and data networks operator:

Between the start of this year and 20th April, NASK CSIRT has received nearly 85,500 reports of cybersecurity threats on the Polish Internet, and has managed to handle 24,000 cybersecurity incidents. The volume of threats has been on the rise since last year, although to a lesser degree compared to the current situation. The number of cybersecurity threats recorded until 20th April this year is equivalent to what was reported in the second half of May last year. The number of reports received in less than four months this year has already surpassed the number received in more than ten months in 2021.

This has been confirmed by the recent claim from the pro-Russian hacking group NoName, who took responsibility for the attacks that caused problems accessing the Stock Exchange website on the morning of Thursday, April 20, 2023. The WSE was not the only website to experience difficulties in the previous days. This serves as a clear reminder of the significance of network monitoring and cybersecurity in the modern world.

This is not the first time that pro-Russian hackers have targeted Poland or other countries that support Ukraine in its war against the Kremlin. In March, cyber criminals attacked. The increasing number of attacks, particularly from the Russian direction, highlights the need for vigilance among individuals and organizations. It is no longer enough to simply have antivirus software installed on computers and networks. Cybersecurity requires a comprehensive approach that includes regular software updates, employee training, and robust network monitoring tools.

Cybersecurity threats can come in many forms, including viruses, malware, and phishing attacks. Without proper protection, these attacks can result in the theft of sensitive information, financial loss, and reputational damage. In the case of the WSE attack, the Stock Exchange's website was not functioning, resulting in potential losses for investors.

In addition to the financial and reputational consequences of cyberattacks, there are also national security implications. The use of cyberattacks by state-sponsored actors to disrupt critical infrastructure or steal sensitive information has become a significant concern for many countries.

To combat these threats, governments and organizations need to invest in robust cybersecurity measures, including network monitoring and threat intelligence capabilities. These tools can help identify and mitigate cyberattacks before they can cause significant damage.
